Freedom “from” versus “to”

JC/ July 9, 2025/ biography

Growing up with a modicum of privilege in the United States during the end of the 20th century we dreamed of the things we could do with our freedom, “to.” We could leave home to make riches and buy big cars, big houses, big boats, big vacations. We had big dreams for things.

In those times we took our freedoms, “from,” for granted; the freedom from worry that the air I breathe is not clean, the water not pure, food not real, nuclear warfare is happening, and we are not free from unwarranted search, seizure, and detention.

Today, I am certain that we are no longer free from these dangers. Perhaps we never were free. That said, I am grateful for the freedoms I have to do what I want with that uncertainty. And I support your choices to do what you will with your freedoms.
